Planting Throughout The Summer?
Yes, You Can!
By Arlene Wheeler And Raymond Koberstein
We often have people calling us wondering if they can plant perennials, trees or shrubs throughout the summer. The answer is yes, Yes and Yes!
Most of us that work in the horticultural industry are just starting to plant our vegetable gardens now, and eventually get on to our perennials, trees and shrubs. This is the time to plant – when the soil is nice and warm. The secret is to keep everything well-watered, not over-watered!
We can now easily look around our yards and gardens and find those bare spots just waiting for that certain perennial or for a few more annuals to add a splash of colour. And those beautiful plants that your neighbor won't share, might even be on sale!
You may be at a point in your life where you are finding your garden has just become too much work, and you'd really like to make your life a little bit easier. Reassess your garden. For example, you may decide to remove the plants in a large bed and put in a few flowering shrubs that will fill the space and look attractive all year round, with little effort on your part. After the spring planting rush, you will have more time to talk with our knowledgeable staff. They can help you choose the combination of plants that's just right for you.
If you've been doing any kind of renovation work, as many of us have, doubtless your garden has suffered. Now that the construction is done, have some fun dealing with another form of construction. We can't stress enough that it's not too late for planting. In fact, the plants you plant now will quickly catch up to those that were planted in May. And at this time of year, you don’t have to worry about a hard frost!
Have children out of school for the summer? What a great way to get in some good old fashioned quality time. Spending time with the family, getting some fresh air, and doing something constructive, creative, and educational is certainly not the worst way to spend a summer afternoon! Fill their time exercising their bodies and minds. They won't even realize that they're learning.
So really, you CAN plant throughout the summer. You CAN fill in those empty spots with something phenomenal. And you CAN have a beautiful garden that you planted late in the season, and Schriemer's Home and Garden Showplace is the place to help you achieve that beautiful, healthy garden you've been longing for!
